Instead of confining our attention to religious objects and symbols, we should direct our respect, attention, and awareness toward everything around us – from the tiniest flower to the majestic mountain peaks. Everything we see and touch, every person and living being with whom we share this world, reflects the divine consciousness and presence.
The true way to be genuinely religious is to see and appreciate the divine in everything, starting from our home and relationships with those close to us.
Let the home be a temple, let all the objects and tools we hold in our hands be sacred relics, and let prayers be expressions of gratitude for everything, not lamentations. Gratitude to God should be expressed through work, constantly aware that one does not act alone, but through us, God acts.
Let every good deed be an altar, and the only sacrifice offered be the rejection of pride and ignorance. Let the only address to God be forgiving understanding towards one’s neighbor; let the only respect of faith be respect for every living being.
As long as this is not the case, temples and religions will only serve as an excuse for hypocrisy and self-deception, a justification for all conflicts. If divine consciousness is at the foundation of existence, why separate and worship it only in special buildings? Why separate it from every living being or ourselves?
The answer is simple: we are unaware of our true nature and the nature of the divine, which unconsciously projects outward into objects. If people only directed 1% of their consciousness that they invest in religious rituals in temples towards their neighbors and the world around them, this world would be paradise.
A person is only made better by admiration and respect for the divine nature of life and existence itself. Religions only hinder this. If someone has become better because of religion, it is because they recognized and applied spiritual teachings in their existence and life, thus connecting with the Wholeness.
True religiosity is always personal and spreads on its own, from within, with kindness and unobtrusiveness. It is never the same for everyone, but it always has a different face, each person’s face. It is fully realized only in the awakened person because it serves his awakening.
